Autumn on the calendar means it’s time to pick sweet potatoes. Roger Johnson, Boone County Sheriff Office Transport/Maintenance Officer took three 309 State Inmates with him to Cross County this past week for the harvest.
Since 2009, we have been allowed to pick sweet potatoes out of the field in Wynne, Arkansas, and bring them back to serve in the jail for inmate meals. Our only cost is the fuel for the trip and overnight accommodations for the officer. Cross County Sheriff’s Office/Jail houses the 309 inmates for the overnight trip.
Ben Eddings Auto Group donated the use of a 2016 Chevrolet 4 door 2500 ¾ ton pickup and Jeff Davis donated the use of a 5000 lb. electric lift dual axle trailer.
This year they brought back 6,040 lbs. of sweet potatoes, a new record for us! These will be used in meals for inmates here at the jail.
We want to thank Cross County Sheriff Office, Ben Eddings Auto Group, Jeff Davis and especially Mr. B.B. Matthews of Wynne, AR for making this a money saving enterprise for our jail.
