Sheriff Hickman reports that on Wednesday, January 19, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted about a possible phone scam occurring in the area. People are being contacted and informed that a family member is incarcerated in a Canada jail. They are also being told that substantial amounts of money need to be wired through Western Union in other countries to pay the fee of an international Bondsman for the release of these family members.
The Sheriff’s Office has taken two complaints similar in nature to the ones described above in the last two months. One person was asked to wire $5,000.00 and the second was asked for $3,200.00.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office would like to make the citizens of Boone County aware of this scam to further protect them. If you are contacted in this manner you should attempt to get further information about where your family member might be and try to contact your family member before sending money anywhere. Please also be aware that when a person is incarcerated in jail, they are normally able to make phone calls to family members to obtain bond.
